Unsinkable: Voices from the Storm
April 13 - May 25, 2022
Beginning Wednesday, April 13, the office of the Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez in partnership with the International Museum of Art & Science will present “Unsinkable: Voices from the Storm,” an exhibition produced by the Bullock Museum, presented in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and made possible by reporters at Texas Monthly.
Hurricane Harvey first made landfall on August 25, 2017, near Rockport, Texas. Over the next five days, the storm affected thousands of people across the state. Unsinkable: Voices from the Storm reveals stories of resilience, heartbreak, and recovery as told to the reporters at Texas Monthly by the Texans who lived it.
In a series of breathtaking photographs and interviews, sixteen Texans come together to describe how everyday citizens fed, clothed, rescued, and cared for each other as the hurricane crashed down around them. In the words of R.G. Ratcliffe, a writer at Texas Monthly, “The people [he] met could have been your neighbors, but their humor and resolution in the face of adversity was the stuff of Texas legends.”
Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, museum exhibitions and documentary films. For more information, please visit Humanities Texas online at http://www.humanitiestexas.org or call 512.440.1991.
