Celebrating Women’s History Month in the RGV

McAllen, TX- The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) partners with South Texas College to host Uproar! a pop-up exhibition and workshop as part of the She Roars! program.

Uproar! The Art of Social Engagement: A Pop-Up Community Exhibit is part of the program She Roars! A Series of Lectures, Workshops, and Exhibitions Celebrating Women’s Contributions to the Humanities, presented by the South Texas College Library Art Gallery and Art Department, in collaboration with community partners at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley – School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement, International Museum of Art & Science, and the McAllen Public Library. The collaboration of events takes place during the month of March, nationally recognized as Women’s History Month.

The She Roars! program includes exhibitions, a self-defense class, a film documentary, story-time workshops, and lectures by founding member of the artist collective, Guerrilla Girls, and illustrator and author Angela Dominguez. Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous collective of female-identifying artists who, since 1985, have utilized humor and stark visuals to spread awareness about the bias within art, film, and popular culture to ignite the sparks of social change.

“We were delighted and honored when Gina Otvos and Melissa Terry from STC approached IMAS to be a host partner for this exhibit involving community contribution as part of STC’s She Roars!” says Ann Fortescue, President & Executive Director at IMAS. “IMAS has been hosting contemporary art exhibitions for over 54 years, and Uproar! continues this tradition of sharing current artistic expression and encouraging community participation.”

The Uproar! pop-up exhibition at IMAS seeks to engage the publics’ understanding of art and its role in culture, support the academic curriculum, and inspire continued education through direct engagement with artists, scholars, and original works of art. The events aim to inspire students and community members to think deeply about collaborative and creative solutions to social issues, locally and globally, by co-creating art for social change.

“The Guerrilla Girls are so lucky to meet so many great people,” says Guerrilla Girls co-founder Käthe Kollwitz. “Artists, museum people, everyone is trying to make the world better, and make it more enjoyable, even as bad as things get.”

She Roars! programs and exhibitions are made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
