Fall is a perfect season for visiting the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS). Community members are invited to enjoy traditional activities at their biggest cultural program of the year. The IMAS kicks off its seasonal programming with the Día de los Muertos Festival presented by H-E-B Helping Here and Market at the Museum on Sunday, October 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The festival is supported in part by Humanities Texas.
Visitors can join a guided tour of the Mexican & Latin American Folk Art exhibition, view community altares, and participate in art activities including candle painting, monarch masks, and paper flowers. Traditional sugar skull decorating will be available during the event for $3 per participant (limited supply). A diverse vendor market will be on site with traditional and handmade goods including art, jewelry, plants, aguas frescas, and sweet treats. Attendees can also look forward to engaging with community partners, including the Mission Historical Museum and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and a special performance by UTRGV Ballet Folklórico will take place at 4 p.m.
“I am delighted to continue to honor the holiday with a festive event. It will be vibrant with the typical Valley passion from local partners and the market will offer something for everyone,” shared Claudia Martinez Gray, Director of Education. “I am most excited for visitors to experience the display of altares in our newly reopened Discovery Pavilion.”

This year’s community altar display is honoring Inspiring Latinas. Community members and organizations were invited to create an altar for a woman who empowered their Latinx communities. Altars will be on view in the museum’s Discovery Pavilion from Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, November 5.
The Día de los Muertos Festival & Market is included in the cost of admission. Sugar skulls decorating is an additional fee of $3. General admission is $5. Admission for children ages 4-12, students with ID, and Senior Citizens 65+ is $3. Admission is $1 per person for WIC and EBT cardholders (up to four people per card). Public school K-12 educators, children 3 and under, and IMAS Members receive free admission. More information can be found online at theimasonline.org or during operating hours at (956) 681-2800.
