Tom Nakashima: Reflections on the Sansei Legacy
December 16 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Hybrid Artist Talk – Tune in on Zoom from home or live in the Clark Family Gallery
Artist talk with Tom Nakashima, featured artist in “Resilience: A Sansei Sense of Legacy.” Tom will tell us about his personal life growing up in the Midwest and the issues of identity he faced. We will also discuss his family, specifically focusing on his uncle Ted Nakashima who wrote the essay “Concentration Camps US Style.” Examining the works he has in this particular show, this talk will study the symbolic meaning behind the icons used in the works in this exhibit. The images used in this exhibit are not particular to these works but are symbols and themes the artist has explored before, such as the cage. The artist will examine previous work around this common symbolism. Finally, IMAS will open the discussion to audience questions to engage in conversation with the Artist.
