Meet Isaac Lopez Garcia, a talented young artisan with a skill and passion for all things crochet.
Isaac is a local crochet artisan raised in McAllen and graduate of Lamar Academy under the International Baccalaureate Program. It was there that Isaac was first introduced to the art of crochet (krow•shay). During his junior year, under the load of academic research papers and deadlines, he felt the need to do something artistic. This is where his love for crocheting began. As it turns out, he was not only a quick learner but became enamored with the craft.
Isaac began with making scarves and beanies and selling them at school. Fast forward, a few months later his school hosted a market where he signed up to be a vendor. Much to his surprise he sold so many of his crochet items which included scarves, beanies, and animal plushies. He felt immense gratitude that people appreciated his hand made crochet pieces and purchased items for themselves or to gift to others. This inspired him to continue learning and improving his craft.
He devoted himself to making all sorts of stuffed animals and soon enough decided to rent a spot inside the Bargain Bazaar, now known as the Mercado District. It didn’t take long to leave the nest and venture into the Marketplace from here in McAllen to Port Isabel and beyond. It has been six years now since he’s been involved in numerous festivals and local markets. It has been a joyful experience from meeting other talented artisans, getting to know people in his community, in addition to self-discovery, reflection and personal growth.
I am delighted for the opportunity to be one of the few selected artisans to have shelf space at the IMAS gift shop. I am excitingly grateful for this opportunity, as I feel this collaboration provides me with a level of recognition, appreciation, and to reach a broader audience. Nevertheless, I believe there will be many more new experiences to discover as I valiantly persist in my pursuit of my passion for crocheting; always believing in me and my art.
Thank you, IMAS, for supporting handmade and small businesses.
With much Gratitude, Isaac
