The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is thrilled to announce the return of its highly anticipated Día de los Muertos Festival and Market at the Museum, supported by H-E-B Helping Here, Whataburger, and Lisa Chapa, M.D. & Jon Joanis. This exciting cultural celebration marks the beginning of IMAS’ fall season programming and promises a day of vibrant festivities for the whole community.
Visitors can join a guided tour of the Mexican & Latin American Folk Art exhibition, view community altares, candle painting and participate in art activities. Traditional sugar skull decorating will be available during the event for $5 per participant (limited supply). A diverse vendor market will be on site with traditional and handmade goods including art, jewelry, and sweet treats. Attendees can also look forward to engaging with community partners, including the UTRGV Ballet Folklórico, Mission Parks & Recreation Folklórico, and Nikki Rowe Mariachi.
“We are thrilled to present an exceptional lineup of performances for our community, showcasing the remarkable talents of young performers from the Rio Grande Valley,” stated Roni Cortez, Interim Director of Education. “Experiences of this caliber offer a culturally enriching and memorable event for all our visitors, contributing significantly to the success of our Día De Los Muertos festivities.”
This year’s community altar display is honoring Innovative Latinos. Community members and organizations were invited to create an altar dedicated to those that greatly influenced their communities in the fields of science, art and culture.. Altars will be on view in the museum’s Discovery Pavilion from Saturday, October 7, through Sunday, November 5.
