McAllen, TX- The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is currently exhibiting Picasso: Imaginary Portraits from the IMAS permanent collection. This exhibition will be available from April 22, 2023, through July 23, 2023.

Picasso: Imaginary Portraits is a series of twenty-nine lithograph prints designed by Pablo Picasso and created by printmaker Marcel Salinas with supervision, guidance, and collaboration with Pablo Picasso. The series of lithographs were completed in the final years of Picasso’s life, from 1969-1972.

The International Museum of Art & Science is one of only three museums in the United States (Florida, California, & Texas) with a complete set of all twenty-nine prints. Of the twenty-nine, twenty-five lithographs were donated to the museum by Mr. Frank and Mrs. Marilyn Schultz in 1979. The remaining four lithographs were purchased by the museum in 2014 to make the complete set.

“IMAS is truly fortunate to have the distinction of being one of only three museums in the United States with this remarkable collection of prints by renowned artist Pablo Picasso. These twenty-nine lithographs capture the spirit and style we recognize as Picasso’s,” says Ann Fortescue, President & Executive Director at IMAS. “Showing us elements of cubism and abstraction in portraiture with a more whimsical, playful direction that allows the viewer to discover facial expressions and characteristics in each work. The contrast of the bright ink colors against the dull, brown paper provides the opportunity to share Picasso’s resourcefulness in using available materials and his high standards in overseeing master printer Marcel Salinas execution of each print.”

Join the IMAS Friday, June 2, for IMAS Summer Members’ Night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to explore Picasso: Imaginary Portraits and a behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming summer exhibition featuring landscapes from the permanent collection.
